Sex, Libido and Menopause

Changes in libido or painful sex around menopause is common due to physical, hormonal, and psychosocial reasons

Drops in oestrogens during menopause decreases blood flow to the vagina, clitoris, and pelvic floor - decreasing engorgement, sensitivity and arousal

If you don’t want to have sex, that is totally ok!

But, this is not the end of a satisfying sex life if that is what you want !

A Chinese Medicine approach can include herbal medicine and acupuncture to improve circulation and lubrication, support hormones, boost libido, manage stress and other menopausal symptoms

A Western medical approach can include seeing a GP with an interest in peri/menopause who may suggest topical oestrogen, an oral HT, thyroid investigations and other therapies

Things you can do at home:

  • Use a water-based lubricant during sex

  • take your time to ‘warm up’ through foreplay before sex

  • managing your stress

  • eating regular meals of whole foods

  • regular exercise

  • and seeking psychological support
