What to Expect During Your First Appointment

if you haven’t been to an acupuncturist or Chinese medicine practitioner, you may be wondering what to expect. Lets demystify it!

  1. Many many many questions!

Both before your appointment and during! Chinese medicine is rooted in a holistic approach to your health so we ask about all aspects of you.

Your new patient forms are comprehensive and will ask about your current symptoms, your health history, your lifestyle, sleep, digestion poo, menstruation, libido, mental health and more.

SO when you come in for your first appointment, we can spend more time discussing your treatment plan and you have maximum amount of time on the table being treated.

  2. Pulse and Tongue examination

In Chinese medicine, we gain lots of information from your wrist pulses and the landscape of your tongue.

Emma will ask to feel each wrist to examine the depth, speed, texture and nature of your pulse. She will also ask to see your tongue to check colour, coating, moisture, shape and details of your tongue. This gives her more information directly from your body as to what is going on with your organ systems.

  3. Acupuncture

Acupuncture stimulates the body’s self healing mechanism. By inserting ultra-fine, single use, sterile needles into specific points in the body called acupoints. The activation of these functionally tasked points opens up communication pathways through the various systems of the body. Needles are left in for 20-30 minutes while you rest.

  4. Chinese herbal medicine

Granules, powder, pills or topical herbal medicine.

Chinese herbal medicine primarily includes plant materials and some preparations include mineral and animal materials. These contain powerful bioactive compounds that can act on the body like pharmaceutical drugs do. Emma will prescribe herbal medicine or supplements to accelerate your healing.

  5. A Treatment Plan

One treatment is most often not sufficient.

Chinese medicine balances your body systems and it takes time. Kind of like going to the gym - you can’t go once and expect a six-pack. Emma will devise an individualised treatment plan for you including what you can do at home to help you feel better.
